Do Underwire Bras Cause Breast Cancer?

If you’ve ever scrolled through social media or online wellness forums, you’ve likely come across alarming claims about underwire bras. From rumors about blocked circulation to fears surrounding breast cancer, these myths cause unnecessary worry.

Let's separate internet fiction from medical fact so you can choose your daily wear with complete peace of mind.

Myth vs. Fact: Underwires and Breast Health

The Myth

Underwire bras restrict the lymphatic system, trapping toxins in breast tissue and causing breast cancer.

The Fact

Underwire bras do not cause cancer. Major health organizations—including the American Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Foundation—confirm there is zero scientific evidence linking any type of bra to breast cancer. Whether your bra has an underwire, is tight, or is worn 24 hours a day, it does not increase your cancer risk.

Where did this rumor start?

The myth originated in a 1995 book claiming that underwires constrict lymphatic drainage. However, this theory ignores basic human anatomy: lymphatic fluid drains up and away from the breast toward the underarm lymph nodes, not downward toward the underwire. Extensive scientific studies comparing the bra-wearing habits of women with and without breast cancer found no difference in risk based on underwire use, cup size, or daily wear hours.

What Does Cause Discomfort? (The Real Culprit: Poor Fit)

While underwires don't cause systemic health issues, ill-fitting bras certainly cause physical discomfort and skin irritation.

When a bra doesn't fit properly, the structure works against your body rather than supporting it:

  • When the cup is too small: The underwire sits directly on sensitive breast tissue rather than surrounding it, leading to painful poking or pinching.

  • When the cup or band is too big: The frame shifts out of place, causing the wire to dig painfully into your sternum, ribs, or breast tissue as you move.

  • Overly tight/loose bands or straps: Can contribute to lingering shoulder, neck, and upper back tension.

  • Chafing and skin reactions: Misaligned wires rub repeatedly against the skin, causing redness or raw spots. Additionally, worn-out bras with deteriorating fabric can expose elastic or rough materials that irritate sensitive skin.

Why Professional Fittings Change Everything

If you’re experiencing breast pain, soreness, or back tension without an underlying medical condition, the solution is often finding the right bra and a proper fit. In fact, doctors frequently refer patients to us with non-medical & medical breast pain to have our professional bra fitters measure them for the proper support that their body needs.

Whether you prefer underwires, wireless styles, bralettes, or sports bras, wearing the right size transforms how you feel throughout the day:

  1. Lifts weight off the shoulders by securing 80% of support from a properly fitted band.

  1. Encourages proper posture by balancing weight distribution across your back.

  1. Eliminates digging and poking by anchoring the wire flat against your body and, completely surrounding the breast tissue.

The Bottom Line

Wear what makes you feel comfortable, supported, and confident. Underwires are entirely safe for your health, but a well-fitted bra—wired or wire-free—is essential for your daily comfort. If your current bra leaves welts, pokes, or aches by the end of the day, it’s not underwires in general at fault—it’s just time for a professional fitting and a fresh replacement!

    Hi Jenna,

There is no scientific evidence that wearing the wrong sized underwire bra can cause any health-related problems. However, wearing the wrong size in a underwire bra can definitely cause temporary pain and discomfort in various places like your neck, shoulders, back, and breasts.

In addition, breast feeding mothers can experience clogged milk ducts while wearing an underwire bra – especially if it is ill-fitting. We highly recommend all mothers to stay away from underwire bras for the first 3 months of breast feeding. After this time frame, their bodies should stop fluctuating as much – that way the bra size can be as accurate as possible and not cause any issues with the underwire causing clogs.

Can wearing the wrong size underwire cause any long-term problems, even if breast cancer isn’t one of them?
